Computer Stops at "Windows is Shutting Down"

Hi,
When I try to use Standby in Power Options on my Windows XP Pro, SP3 Dell
computer, quite often when I bring it out of standby and try to shut it down
normally, it stops at “Windows is Shutting Downâ€.
I have to shut the computer down with the power button on the tower.
I have the following options set in Control Panel, Power Options Properties:
Power Scheme – Minimal Power Management
Turn Off Monitor – After 30 Minutes
Turn Off Hard Disks – Never
System Standby – After One Hour
I do not have Hibernation enabled
I have been keeping track of how often this happens and it occurs about 50 %
of the time.
The Syatem BIOS is in the S3 – ACPI Mode.
Does anyone know a solution to this problem.
Thanks for any suggestions.

you might want to see if that problem
also exists in safe mode.

if not and windows shuts down in a
timely manner,

then it may mean there is something
running in normal mode that windows
cannot disable or shut off in order to
proceed with a successful shutdown.

If it's a tower, just disable standby. It's always been buggy and a
lot of pcs don't wake up from it.

Hi Hodges & db,

Thanks for the replies.

I can't try Safe Mode to check for a problem because I don't have this
problem everytime I shut down. I only have it about 50% of the time.

I think I'll go with db's suggestion of disabling Standby.

Thanks for your help.
