Unable to install a printer to USB port

I am trying to install an HP deskjet5650 to a Dell
OptiplexSX with Windows XPpro. I keep getting an error
that printer can not be installed because 'the inf file
was written for Windows 95 or later'. I get this error
when using the CD that came with the printer AND using new
drivers downloaded from HP. The printer installs via USB
on other XP PCs. I can't use the LPT1 parallel on thiss PC
port as it is being used by another device. HP's tech
support documentation does not help. The PC does recognize
the printer as an HP5650.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks..

Install the drivers first and then plug in the printer. When you
plug in a USB device, the operating system assumes that the drivers
are already present and may install obsolete drivers if that is all
you have on the computer. The DeskJet drivers included with the
Windows XP CD only have those which were certified prior to the
publication of the CD. The printer manufacturers supply drivers to
Microsoft which tests them and charges the manufacturers a fee for
the certification and inclusion with the CD issue.

Make sure you uninstall the drivers completely and printer disconnected from
computer then install new drivers with printer still disconnected until
asked to connect.

Usually, with HP Deskjets, you *don't* need to install the drivers by hand,
as Windows XP includes a *generic* USB printer driver that works with HP's
Deskjets (I have the 694C and I have not needed the driver disk that came
with the printer).

Just for grins, I just connected it to my computer, and let it *install
itself*. Right now, it's printing the printer test page...which it just
finished.

What speed USB ports do you have?
