USB to Printer Port Adapter Troubleshooting

I purchased an adapter cable to enable my HP LaserJet IIIp to print through a
USB port, since my laptop does not have a parallel printer port. I've used
the wizard (several times) to install the proper driver, and the printer
shows as ready, but I always get an error message, and troubleshooting gets
me nowhere. Any ideas on what I'm missing?

Thanks!

It will be really hard for anyone to help with the issue without knowing
what that error message says, would you post it, please?

That's just it - there doesn't seem to be a specific error message, or I
don't know how to find it. All I get is "The file you sent to the computer
failed to print. Use the troubleshooter to figure out the problem.
(paraphrase). And the troubleshooter doesn't help me at all.
