Stop error/blue screen of death when booting

When I try to bott my computer, a few seconds after it displays the XP Logo,
it gives me the following stop error:

STOP Error: 0x000000ED
STOP Error Code: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

How can I fix this?

For some reason, I've tried getting access to the recovery console, but it
doesn't even detect my Windows installation. Is there any way to fix this?

This can happen if it's corrupt enough, and if so you can't force the XP
installation CD to see the installation. Try installing the drive as a
slave drive in another XP or Win 2000 computer and run chkdsk /r, or
download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.
This will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from it and run the
diagnostics.
