Booting problems 0x000000ED

I couldn't start my computer (XP Professional SP2) any more and following is
the error message:

Unmountable_Boot_Volume
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x82FA8900, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

On Microsoft support website, there is an article about 0x000000ED, but I
cannot find this specific combination in that article. It suggests that it's
either UDMA controller problem or the damaged file system. I tried to fix it
with the Recovery Console and used "chkdsk /r". The message is that there
are un-recoverable errors. Should I use "fixroot" under this circusmtance?
Will "fixroot" create more problems if I need to bring the computer to a
professional?

I would appreciate any help!

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics on the drive.

Other utilities to look at are HDtune and Spinrite from Gibson research
