Blue screen during boot

Hi

I have a HP pavilion ze4500 (AMD) notebook with Windows XP sp2.
For a couple of months I have had problems during boot/startup. As Windows
is starting I will have a number of blue screens, causing reboot. These
problems have accelerated during the last weeks and now it could take as long
as 15-20 minutes, equal to 10-15 bluescreens before I get to the Windows log
in.
I have seen two different types of blue screens but there might be more. One
of them says:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, Stop: 0x000000ED (0x84F8F030, 0xC000009C,
0x00000000, 0x00000000)
The other says:
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, Stop: 0x00000050 (0xF768AC80, 0x00000000,
0xF7675051, 0x00000000).

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in
the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system
documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows
XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to
load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP
installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the listy and press R to
start the repair. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and
reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup
will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and
settings will remain intact. This should take care of this corrupted
operating system.

Unfortunately the o.p.'s computer is a Hewlett Packard which means he
almost certainly will not have a Windows XP Installation CD. All they
provide is a hidden "System Recovery" partition which will fix (?) the
problem by wiping out the hard drive and installing a factory-fresh
copy of Windows.

Hi Jonas. The UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error indicates a problem with
either the data structure on the hard drive or with the hard drive
itself.

1. Determine the make of the hard drive in your computer, go to the
drive manufacturer's web site, and download their free diagnostic
testing utility. Run that to check out the drive for possible
defects.

2. Open a Command Prompt window (Start - Run - CMD) and enter the
following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

Choose the option to run this on the next startup, then shut down and
restart the computer. It will take a while to run the test so plan on
a long leisurely lunch break, or run it overnight.

The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error results from a reference to an
invalid memory address. This can indicate a problem with defective
memory chips or it could be a software issue. To check for possible
defective memory download one of the following free memory testing
utilities and run it to check out your RAM.
DocMemory http://www.simmtester.com
Windows Memory Diagnostic http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Memtest86: http://www.memtest86.com

If your laptop is still under warranty I suggest that you contact HP's
Tech Support regarding these errors, especially if either of the above
tests produces any indication of hardware problems.

You should also make sure that you have the latest drivers etc. from
HP for your specific model as software problems can also cause these
errors, especially the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Good luck
