Blue Screen Error Codes: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x81EE4D98, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
What is this telling me? I can get past the splash screen, I've tried the
advance settings (by pressing F8) but so far still cannot get past the splash.

ascertain a xp cd
and select option
"repair".

the recovery console
will initiate and you
will be able to get to
a disk prompt.

type in and run the
commands>:

chkdsk /r
fixboot
fixmbr

then "exit", remove cd
and retry your system.

incidentally, the fixboot
will provide warning
messages.

but proceed to engage
the fix for the master
boot record.

them, after pressing F8.................I still go back to the error
messages. Looks like a reformat, right? Let me know and thanks for your help

ok,

then there is one more
place you can access
were processes occurs
before the booting

which is called the
bios.

you can access the
bios by pressing a
certain f key soon
after you press the
on button.

sometimes it is the
f2 key or the del key.

but you can check
your computer manual
or the computer's home
site for the method to
access your bios.

the bios will likely
reveal to you that
there is no cd drive
connected or no hard
drive connected,

in addition to other
hardware that is
connected to the
motherboard.

you can wiki "bios"
to get an idea of
what it does.

in any case, the
bios must register
the hardware connected
to the mother board.

if it does not or the
data it presently has
is erroneous,

then your computer
will act as if it doesn't
have a hard drive or
cd.

once inside the bios
you should also have
an option to press a
key to automatically
enter the settings in
bios.

so try the auto key
first.

once the bios is populated
with the correct data for
your hard disk,

you should be ok.

if not then try the step
I mentioned earlier.

lastly, there is something
important to keep in mind
with the bios.

the mother board has
a round battery installed
in a clip.

the battery is called a
cmos battery and can
be easily be replaced
with one from walmart.

if the battery is low or
dead, then the data
for the bios will be
erased and blanked
out.

so if the bios cannot
retain the settings or
the bios system clock
isn't keeping good time,

then it is time to replace
that cmos battery.

Wrong.

Did you have a power failure?

If yo have no bootable XP CD, all of the recommended actions can be
performed from a bootable XP Recovery Console CD that you can make.

Download the bootable Recovery Console ISO called:

xp_rec_con.iso

from here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use this free and easy program to create your bootable CD:

http://www.imgburn.com/

Boot on that CD and run the commands db specified.

I would start first with just the chkdsk /r and that may fix you right
up.

Try to boot.

If no good, boot on the CD again, try chkdsk /r and fixboot.

If no good, boot on the CD again, try chkdsk /r, fixboot and fixmbr.

Thanks, I'll try to boot (F2) from the CD drive, place the dell diagnostice
resource CD in and see what happens.
I'm beginning to believe I've had these problems because the ati 9800 video
card went bad while in this machine. Good point about the battery, the
computer was build in early Feb 2004. Could the video card have "blown" the
battery?
Thanks for the help.

the video card would
not likely have anything
to with upsetting the bios.

if anything, if the card
was mechanically faulty
it would screw up the
mother board or the
slot its in.

while at the home site
double check to see if
they may have released
firmware to update your
bios.

if so then let us know
to help you thoroughly
understand what you
need to do.

provide us with the link
to the web page that has
all the updates for your
machine.
