Unmountable Boot Volume Error

At start up I'm receiving the blue screen of death and the error message says
Unmountable_boot_volume

Stop 0x000000ED (0x812D84D8, 0xC000009c, 0x0000000, 0x0000000).

I have Windows XP. I have read a thread on a similar problem, but the 1st 0x
no. after the OxED one is different. Should I try rebooting with the Windows
CD and run the chkdsk/f?

Yes - I would try running CHKDSK.

Note that it is good to have a backup (via using a Linux Live CD or other
method), in case CHKDSK makes it worse

As the other poster mentioned, never run chkdsk without first having a full
and complete backup of important data.
