XP UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME after update

Hi all, hope you can help me!
I'm getting an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME with STOP :0x000000ED(0x8A9DF900,
0x80000003, 0x0000000, 0x00000000)
This happened after an issue i noticed with automatic updates - it hung
after installing 13 updates. I left it for a few hours it kept flashing
'Installing update 13..." I shut the system off after about 6 hours - there
was no hard disk activity for hours before I turned it off.
Started up again and got the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.
I ran the recovery console and did a chkdsk /p tried to boot - no luck -
then chkdsk /r, then fixboot - no luck.
I ran hard disk diagnostics from Dell - no problems.

Might be related - After Microsoft cleaned spyware from my machine 2 days
ago there was a problem booting into Safe Mode - blue screen with "?" in top
left corner - booted into windows normally without problems after though.

I'm thinking Update has messed with how Windows loads..

Any suggestions, anyone know what the hex code 0x80000003 means? - it
doesn't mean something is corrupt

Thanks for your help,
Paul.

I'm thinking you're full of it and you have much more work to do!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in

software), and adware.

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I'm very curious to see if/how you resolved your issue.  I am having the
exact same problem.  Had reminents of Google redirect virus after many
scans by many different malware/anti virus programs - then, let Windows
Update run which hung just like yours.  Now I get the
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and same deal with the weird ? Blue Screen in
safe mode.

No luck with FIXBOOT - even tried repairing the MBR with Dell's tool.

Any luck so far?

You can begin troubleshooting after you successfully load the XP
Recovery Console.

Do you have or can you borrow/copy a genuine bootable XP installation
CD (not the same as a Dell System CD) or a bootable XP Recovery
Console CD?
