Still can't boot XPe from CF formatted in NTFS

Joseph

I found no way to boot XPe from CF which is in NTFS format.
Here is the steps that I created the primary partition:

1. Create a primary partition on CF using FDisk.exe.
2. Set the partition active.
3. Format the partition as NTFS in W2k/Xp.
4. Deploy the XPe image (NTFS component added) to the CF

During boot, a message "Disk Error, Invalid System Disk"
is received. It seems that the system cannot find the NT
Loader to boot the XPe.

I wonder if the NTFS can be used in removable disk. From
what I know, there is document decribe using EWF on CF,
which is in NTFS format. Since I don't want to use EWF,
therefore I can't follow those document to create NTFS
partition.

Can anyone help me???

You mention two things that don't glue together.
Like partitioning removable CF.

FDisk might not care about this. But I don't know how XP format command will
handle this.
I wonder if the NTFS can be used in removable disk.

If you can format this partition from XP with FAT and make it boot, then
formatting it with NTFS should also work.

Did you include the NTFS components in your runtime? If you were using FAT
before on the CF with no problems, you presumably have the FAT format
components there, but you may not have the NTFS components.

During boot, a message "Disk Error, Invalid System Disk"
is received. It seems that the system cannot find the NT
Loader to boot the XPe.

This error does not depend on OS configuration.

Don't forget to use the bootprep utility to point to NTLDR in the MBR of the
CF

Don't think he need to bootprep the CF if he use NTFS on it.

Hi Joseph

I hope you have solved your probelm by now. If not maby som of this
will help.

First Compact Flash comes in two versions.
1) A version that windows XP / XPe sees as removable. Windows has the
"Feature" that it can only see/Handle one partition. Fdisk dont care
about this, and can without problems create more partitions. if you
need more than one partition this is not the one to chose.
2) A version that act as a normal HD, you can make up to 4 partitions
(Limited by Windows)

Here is My procedure:
On A DOS machine (I boot my Target device with a Floppy)
1. Create a primary partition on CF using FDisk.exe.
2. Set the partition active.
3. Format the Flash with Format c: /s
4. After this procedure make sure that it is posible to boot on the
CF

On a XP machine ( My desktop)
5. convert the File system by using: Convert <drive> /fs:ntfs
(As far as I remember A CF marked as removable version 1) from
above can not be formated as NTFS under Windows XP. No problems with
version 2))
6. Deploy the XPe image (NTFS component added) to the CF

This works for me.

By the way does the Disk partition and cluster size match the numbers
set up in the Target designer. As far as I remember thise figurs are
critical for disks under 1 GB.

Have you tryed with a HD? running the FBA on a CF can be prety hard
for the CF

Henrik
