Recording Software Won't Record What's Being Played

A few years ago I had to do some work with Real Player files and I used to
play them in Real Player and record into Nero Wave Editor.

I tried a few days ago and it's no longer possible. I then tried recording
from other medial players (Winamp and Media Player) and also tried recording
into a different recording program (CoolEdit 96). This didn't work either -
same outcomes....

When I try to record - the recording programs won't 'hear' any sound, no
matter what settings I put into the sound configuration. For some settings
eg: stereo mix, the record volume goes right to red and the only thing
recorded looks like some weird blip. For other settings, there's nothing
generated.

It doesn't appear to be software based, as it happens no matter which player
is playing or which recorder is recording. This makes me reluctant to find a
different recording program, as I think the problem is somewhere in my
Windows configuration.

The computer plays sounds just fine. I've also tried just about every
combination I can think of.

I have windows XP with all the updates applied.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers, Streamer

Did you change devices between the times of success and failure?

I can imagine that your (default?) audio output is set to one device, and
that your (default?) audio input is set to another.

That is the only cause I can think of (but there may be more...) - and the
cure is obvious.

Keep us posted.

I am having the same problem. I use a program called Audacity and another one
called WavePad. My sound card is a good one and plays well. My problem is the
two recording programs do not show any activity on the meter bar. Nothing
records! I use the same programs on my desk top at home and they work well.
This problem is on my laptop. I use line-in and didn't change anything like
at home and still get no recordings. Any ideas? Where do I check for my
default valuse so I can either change them or what? Thank you

Default devices for sound playback, sound recording and MIDI playback can be
set through Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Audio. (It is
accessile from other places, too.)
Notice the checkbox "Use only default devices".

The default devices are the ones that Windows itself uses.In Audacity (Edit
| Preferences | Audio I/O) they are referred to as "Microsoft Sound Mapper".

A cause I could think of in your case would be, that you're trying to use a
non-existent device. Does your laptop really have a Line In? Mine doesn't,
yet I see "Line In" in the extended Mixer (double-click on the Volume icon
in the System Tray), even in playback mode.

Thkssk for the info. Stupid question, how do you find out if your laptop has
a line-in feature? I guess this might be my problem since that is what I use
at home on my desk top. If there is no line-in feature how would you use
these audio programs? I download music and store on my computer to burn
later. I have used certain programs for quite awhile with no problems and
suddenly can't use them.
