The Pro mp3 format with examples

Standard mp3s do not sound very good when encoded at low bit rates such
as 32 Kbps, such as would be needed for streaming on a 57K dialup
connection. Other compressed formats such as wma and ra often work
better at such low rates. However there is a greatly improved mp3
variation called Pro mp3. In general it can be played back on most
players that can handle standard mp3. To encode, you need some rather
expensive software. Nero can encode in the Pro mp3 format, but you have
to buy a special plugin from them to do this.

I have recorded an example of Pro MP3 and put it up on my site for you
to try. It is recorded at 32K, is over 4 minutes long, and uses only a
bit over 1 MB. I can assure you that a standard mp3 recorded under
these conditions sounds very bad.

To stream on the WMP go to http://www.cwdjr.net/mpg/stripPRO.wax . The
extension wax is a Microsoft playlist file that forces the audio to
open in the WMP.

To stream on a recent Real player, go to
http://www.cwdjr.net/mpg/stripPRO.rpm . The rpm Real playlist extension
forces opening in the Real player.

To play on a m3u play list, go to http://www.cwdjr.net/mpg/stripPRO.m3u
.. What player you get, if any, depends on which one is assigned to a
m3u playlist. I get the Winamp player.

To just download the actual Pro mp3, go to
http://www.cwdjr.net/mpg/stripPRO.mp3 . Then you can play it locally on
any player you have that suports mp3, and that includes most players.
