Recording music from LP's as DJ mixes or any sounds for that matte

Mike

HI,
My problem is that when I record music, during the quiet parts of the track,
the recording completely dies out and goes quiet unless a loud sound is
played over the top to "wake up" the sound recorder again, also, when I play
music at a normal level for too long, it eventually by the end of it cuts out
and doesnt play the full sound being recorded. It's as if there is some sort
of filter which filters out too loud and too soft and stop recording sound
but silence when this happens.

My Specs are: Dell Inspiron 6400, Windows XP SP3, Sigmatel High Definition
Audio Codec, 1gb ram, Intel T2050 @ 1.60Ghz (Duo)

I have tried using the following software: Audacity, Acoustica, and I even
bought TWO external sound card devices, one a 5.1 channel external soundcard
(apparently doesnt work on my laptop) and the other a Behringer U-control
UCA202 2-channel external sound recording device with its own software
(EnergyXT2).
I also Installed ASIO4ALLv2 and have up to date sound drivers on all these
devices and software.
I use either microphone or Line in via 2 X RCA to microphone jack from a
behringer DJX700 mixer from the master record output.

THE only way I can TEMPORARILY overcome the sound recorder to stop cutting
out is to CONSTANTLY change the buffer settings on the ASIO4ALL software as
this seems to keep my soundcard awake, if I leave it on the one setting it
eventually stops recording sound (or very muffled, filtered, static, dodgy
sound).

Now my question is, is there a way to remove these buffer settings on this
soundcard so I can record the full sound regardless how loud and how soft the
music is where the recorded sound file is the SAME volume through out not
cutting out, OR is there a way for the ASIO4ALL software to constantly change
the buffersize from a range to keep my soundcard "awake" and hence having a
perfectly sounding recording.

I have tried all settings from buffer size etc etc, all sound volume levels
in CP, the software etc etc, all different settings as setting the different
sound devices as default etc etc.

Any information would be of help.

Kind Regards,

-Mike

I suggest the following :

1) Un-install both (if necessary) or the one soundcard and all related
drivers.

2) Close down the PC and take out the soundcard(s).

3) Boot up (make sure any on-board sound is disabled in the BIOS.

4) Switch off the PC and install ONE (and only one) soundcard.

5) Boot up. XP will find the soundcard, do NOT let it search for drivers
etc.

6) Install your soundcard drivers from the software that came with it.

7) Re-boot if necessary.

8) Use Audacity instead of Sound Recorder, it should work correctly now.

It sounds like you have a conflict between drivers etc, and possibly
on-board sound as well. Using one card only should fix that.

Don't use ASIO4All - use the ASIO drivers that come with your soundcard IF
necessary.

Re post if further problems.

Cheers,
Jerry

Thanks, I'll give this a try, just for the record- when I wrote sound
recorder i didnt mean the generic one installed on the laptop, I meant all
the software I was using: Acoustica, Audacity, EnergyXT2.

Hey, the suggested information didn't work probably as i forgot to mention
the following information:
Sigmatel was the initial soundcard which was having the problems with sound
cutting out and refusing to record the full sound but rather just the
muffled/filtered/static sound: - which is why I tried installing others to no
avail.

Which is why I installed ASIO4all and other drivers which produced some
temporary relief with decent quality while it recorded

Sigmatel - onboard sound right ? Did you make sure it was turned off (at
BIOS level) when using another card ?
