Printing Problems

Brand new to PP.
Made a short presentation with a downloaded template from office online.
Went well. Slides looked fine on the screen in color. Went to print in
color on my color printer, and:
some pages were blank, just the template background.
text was missing from charts.
some titles were missing from slides

print preview was perfect, slides looked fine on the screen.
Using all TT fonts--Arial of all things--nothing weird.
When I did it in greyscale, it seemed fine--just not color.

what's the problem? Never had this kind of issue with the printer or any
other Office application, had the printer for 14 months.

PowerPoint relies on Windows for a great deal of the rendering for print.
Windows, in turn, relies on the printer driver that was supplied by the
printer manufactoror.

I would recommend that you start by visiting the printer manufacturer's
website and check for newer driver updates. Most printers need a printer
driver update before they make it to market, so chances are yours will need
one.

I would also take this time to suggest that you check for Windows updates,
Office updates, and DirectX updates.

The VERY first thing the printer installation program did was search for
updates, it has the latest firmware and software drivers from Dell. This I
double checked as well.

Office and Windows are set to automatically update, so of course they are
all up to date, this I double checked as well.

Still not printing, though.

OK, had to get that stuff out of the way. Next, let's check some more
things.

Is the printer on a network? If so, try to re-install the printer when
directly connected to the computer.

Update to the most current DirectX from the Microsoft website.

Try printing the True Type fonts as graphics (Tools => Options => Print =>
Print TT fonts as graphics)

DirectX was updated as part of my checking to see if the WinXP was up to date.
Printer isn't really on a network; it is connected via ethernet though,
through my DSL router and the connection hasn't been an issue before.
Did check the TT as graphics, and changed it, same result
Again, prints fine as B&W, so something's happening in the color?

Try removing any background graphics. Typically, PPT does this for you
automatically when you print in B/W, so if the graphic is the problem, it
wouldn't cause the printer to go urp when you print B/W but might in color.

I would try (temporarily) attaching the printer via parallel or USB. See if
this allows it to print correctly. If so, then we know the issue is with
the connection.

I ran into something like this myself. In my case, it was always the title
that had trouble printing, and it always came from the same department since
they were passing around slides. I could see the title, but when I printed,
it simply wasn't there, nor did it show up when I viewed the presentation in
black and white.

I don't know what caused it, but this was how I fixed it: I cut the text
out, reapplied the layout, and repasted the text.
