Printing Large JPG Image from PowerPoint

C

chelsea

I have created a PP slide with a large jpg image of a map. I have added text
boxes and shapes to mark the map. All objects are grouped together, or could
be ungrouped if required. When I print (to both large laser plotter or
regular desktop laser jet) the map image does not print, only the text boxes
and shapesprint. I have scoured the internet for answers, and wasted too much
paper. Please help!
-I have tried greyscale/color settings.. this seems not to be the issue.
-The image was added to slide by insert-->picture-->from file
-it is not the background of the slide
-was initially very large, i have fit it to the size of slide
-I need to eventually print it to 40inx28in on laser plotter (I have played
around with printer settings and page setup settings)

The image shows up in print preview--but does not print. I have tried
printing the file to a PDF just to test, and the image does not show up in
pdf (it looks just like what comes off the printer)

I apologize if this is longer than it needs to be, but I've tried to include
all information that could ever be relevant!

Which version of PPT are you using?

Are you printing in color or grayscale?

Even though you've fit the JPG to the slide, it is still large -- that is,
lots of pixels. Try compressing it. Actually, make a copy of the slide, then
select the jpg, choose Ctrl+X to cut it, then Paste Special. Choose PNG in
the Paste Special dialog to paste the JPG as a PNG that's sized to the
slide. Does that print?

Thank you, Echo S!

Cutting Image and then Special Pasting PNG worked--Thanks much. Is there any
chance this will distort the image at all?

I am using PPT 2003, and I tried printing in both color and greyscale. And
they both worked this time--Thank you.

Well, that's a good question and it's why I suggested making a copy of the
slide before cutting and pasting. :)

Your pasted PNG is the same size as your slide. Is your slide set up as 40 x
28, or is it set up as 20 x 14?

Slide is set for 40x28.. I printed it on my large plotter, and I'm looking at
it full size( 40x28)--doesn't seem to be distorted. Maybe a little fuzzy
though? If I need to print it larger in the future, will I run into
more..fuzziness?

You should be okay with it at 40x28, but if you need it larger, yeah, you
could run into problems. And since it looks fuzzy to you, well, let's see if
we can't resolve that...

You might try going back to the original, right-clicking, choosing Format
Object (or Format Picture?) and see what it says in the Size area. Size it
so it's a bit larger than your slide, but still proportionate. (You can hit
"lock aspect ratio" and change the percentages.) Then cut that and paste as
PNG and then size it to the slide by dragging a corner.

So I guess you may want to keep that original slide around -- or at least
hang onto the image -- if you're going to have to print it large like that.

You might be able to just size the original to 100% size, then cut and paste
special as PNG and size to the slide. PPT might print that. Then you could
just use that big ol' image, just as a PNG instead of as a JPG. Worth a try
(on a copy again).

chelsea,

From what I've read with your replies with Echo... it sounds like your
original JPG has toooo many pixels in it for powerpoint (and or your printer
driver) to cope with.

How many 'pixels' does the original jpg contain?

To try and maximise the quality (so it does not look fuzzy/jagged) when
printed.

I suggest you half the number of pixels - If the original has 10,000 pixels
wide, then try a 5,000 pixels wide. - and do a test (try to print to PDF to
save paper).

If that prints...OK, then try 7,500 pixels wide. If it does not print, then
try 2,500... eventually you'll reach a size that works for your large print.

cheers
