Printer conflicts

I have an HP LaserJet 1200 connected to my Windows XP
maching via parallel port. Also have an Epson 960
connected via USB. When I print a photo from PhotoShop
to the Epson, it works fine, once. It is followed by a
single page with a smiley face symbol from my HP, then no
further printing is possible until reboot. If I
disconnect the HP, I can use the Epson all day. I had
both printers attached in a like way to my previous
computer and everything was compatible. What gives?
Windows won't allow me to delete any ports or make
adjustments other than uninstalling the printers. The HP
is shown connected to a "DOT" port, whatever that is,
rather than LPT1, although it is connected parallel as I
indicated.
