HP Laserjet 4M Installation

I just upgraded to WinXP from Win98. After an apparently normal installation
of my HP Laserjet 4M parallel printer it will not print. I tried
uninstalling and reintalling several times and tried updating drivers but
nothing works. Although I enter the printer port as LPT1 during
installation, Device Manager show shows the printer port as LPT3. I have no
other devices connected locally to the parallel port. Any ideas how to
corrrect this?

Thanks,
John

One way may work, go to the printer properties, Ports tab.
Put a check mark in each LPT port, click Apply and OK.
The printer will automatically go to the first free port to
print and your is #3, and should be available.

There is only 1 parallel card. No, I tried reinstalling the printer to LPT3
but that didn't work either. I even tried deleting the LPT3 entry in the
Device Manager, rebooting and then reinstalling the printer. I tried this
using LPT1 and LPT3. Neither worked. I have a feeling there are some
Register entries carried over from the original Win98 installation that have
to be removed but, I don't know where to look. Can you help with that?

Thanks,
John

Does the printer work if you configure the port to LPT3?
