Multiple printers on home machine

I have an HP Deskjet 990CSE printer that I have been using for years. It is
connected via the serial (I think that is what it is) port on the computer.
Last night I connected my photo printer to the USB port and now my HP will
not print. I can get the Epson PictureMate to print without a problem. I
have tried to install and uninstall the printer ports, the printers, etc.
Nothing works. Do I need to have an A/B switch to connect two printers?

Back when the 990CSE was in vogue, printers used parallel ports.
Often new printer change the default printer when you install them.
They ask if you want to make the printer the default but one might
miss the question with all the "OKs" and "Nexts" you have to click
to do the installation. Other printers might redirect the parallel
port to the USB port by taking over operation of the printer
spooler. A/B switches are used when you have two printers connected
to the same port on the computer, usually a parallel port. This is
not the case in your situation.
