HP Epson Conflict

After purchasing a new computer - my first Windows XP coming, coming from
95SE - SP1 I find that my HP Laserjet 1200 printer and my Epson Stylus Photo
1280 will not play together. HP is connected via parellel port, port DOT4_001
(as directed by the manufacturer) and Epson is via USB, direct to the
computer.

Symptoms:

HP is fine. Epson will print one job - but it ends with the HP printing a
single page with a smiley face and an arrow on it. Upon attempting a second
Epson print job, the system locks up.

After some back and forth Epson says that the status monitoring programs
conflict and I have no choice but to uninstall one or the other program or
have only one printer connected at a time.

I hate to give up though. Does anyone have a suggestion?

You may be able to turn one or the other of the Status monitors off by
selecting the appropriate box in the printer driver setup/option windows.
Alternately, You may be able to prevent loading of the monitor, or even turn
it off with task manager. I usually do this sort of thing as a debug
method, followed by defeating/disabling the offending monitor.

The monitor module for my R300 Epson is set to not start automatically, and
only comes up when I select it from a maintance menu within the driver
options. A default install would bring it up as windows starts up.
