Numbering nastiness with captions, chapters and appendices

Hi, Hi!!

Is there anyway I can convince WORD that a heading
for a new chapter and a heading for an appendix are in
essence the same?

Our documentation standards (from on high) require
tables and figures numbered in the format

Item x.n:

where x is either a chapter number or an appendix letter,
and n is a count of the number of the item in a given
chapter or appendix. (i.e. Table 2.1:, Table B.3:)

In all ways, except numbers for chapters and letters
for appendices, we want both types of heading treated the
same way: to have the same effect on subsections,
captions, display in TOC, numbering resetting, etc.

Can anyone offer me any assitance on this? Sorry to
be such a pest, but I am getting nowhere fast.
