I have a WinXPpro box networked with a Win95 box and a Win98se box using
a Linksys router. I have an ancient HP IIIp LaserJet printer attached
to the XP box via LPT1 and shared with the other two. Up til now, it's
been working fine. I had some mechanical probs with the printer, and
disconnected it (didn't uninstall) and installed a new printer
temporarily. I reconnected the IIIp, and after some resetting of
defaults, got it to print directly from XP again. If I try to "print a
test page" from the printer properties sheet over the network from
Win95, I get the following error: "There was an error writing to
\\XPBox\Printer for printer (Network HP LaserJet IIIP). The access code
is invalid." If I try to do it from Win98, the jobs just sit in the
queue. The same happens if I try to print from Notepad or other app.
What is going on?
I've never set security restrictions on the printer, but when I went to
check if they somehow had been activated, there is no "security" tab on
the printer properties dialog. How do I get that back?
