Local Printer printing to Network Printer - Help!!!

I have an HP LaserJet 1200 connected via Parallel Port to a Windows XP
computer. The computer is part of the work network. We have an HP Deskjet
630c attached as a shared printer on the server. When I install the 1200,
it defaults to port DOT4_001, which has "HP LaserJet 1200" as the
description. I unselect that and select LPT1: as the port. Then when I try
to print, it prints from the network printer on our server. The LPT1: port
on my local computer says nothing about being connected to a shared printer.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. I have uninstalled LPT1 and
restarted. It always prints to the network printer instead. I don't
understand why this is happening and I cannot correct it. I am trying to
print from DOS and I have to use the LPT1 port. Help!!!

You haven't said how you are trying to print! Are you just clicking on
the Print Icon on the toolbar or are you going the long way i.e. File,
Print etc etc.

If you are clicking on the Print icon on the toolbar, then you are
printing on the default printer which must be the network printer. I
suggest change the default printer by:

Start, Printers & Faxes
Now right-click on the printer you want to use and select "Set as
default printer"

It's not that simple. I am printing from a DOS program, but the same thing
happens if I print from anywhere (ie: Notepad). The local printer is the
only printer installed. I don't even have a network printer installed. If
I select the local printer (which is the only printer) and print a test
page, it prints on the network printer as well. Somehow my LPT1 is routing
to the network printer even though the network printer is not installed and
there is no indication that LPT1 is redirected to the network.

I suspect that the computer may have had the network printer installed on it
previously and captured the LPT1 port in order to print from DOS, but if so
the network printer was deleted. I have no idea why it continues to print
to the network printer and not the local printer.

Open a command prompt and issue
NET USE

you should find out if there is a persistent connection set for LPT1

Ok Try this:

Open Printers & Faxes
Right-click on one of the listed printers
Under Properties, you should have a tab called ports
Scroll through the list and delete the ports that are redundant
Reboot the system
Try again to print

That was the answer. God Bless you Bob. I typed in NET USE LPT1 /DELETE
and it solved the problem.

Thanks for your help!
