Logon says I have mail but I don't

C

Chris

When I get to the user logon screen when I start up my
computer, it says I have 1 unread mail message. However,
using outlook and outlook express, no where is there any
unread messages. How can I make this go away? Thank you
for your time

Go to Start and type "regedit" without the quotes in the run box and press
enter. Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
Click the plus sign, go to the e-mail account with which you've had this
issue. Look for message count in the right pane. You'll see an entry as
follows, 0x00000000 followed by a number in parenthesis as in (98), change
the number in parenthesis to zero or whatever the count should be.

Unread mail should not be set to 0 as it will say 0 messages waiting. The entry should be removed if 0.

From the MSDN shsetunreadmailcount
It is important that e-mail clients do not set the number of unread messages to 0 when the application exits, because this causes the number of unread messages to be erroneously reported as 0.

I did try to email this to you michael but that was too difficult.

To David & Michael
I didn't see a thank you from Chris, but I'm sending you a big "Thanks"
because I've been looking for a solution to this.

David, what you say makes perfect sense but I've used this myself more than
once and it clears the issue.

Oh, also, sorry about the e-mail, David, for future reference us
(e-mail address removed). If for some reason that changes, visit my online column
at the link below, scroll to CyberSpace, click it, open the most recent
column which will always be at the top of the list, there's a link to my
e-mail embedded in my name. NOTE: older columns may have an address I no
longer use.:)

Take care and thanks.

David, Once you were telling about an Add-in which resolves the unread count
issue, remember?
Was this the one you were referring to?

That's it. It's only been like that for over a year. It's not so much that it resolves it (which it would), but as messenger is upgraded the feature is removed from windows and the addin needs to be loaded for the feature to work. In addition Messenger is an addin to OE. As messenger does OE count I not heard of any other mail client that supports this, but I haven't researched mail clients for a year or so.

This is one way mail count gets abandoned, the other typical way is letting someone check their mail on your computer. Of course changing ISP's is a third way.
