Hi there,

I'm not exactly new to the forum but haven't used it in ages so I thought this would be a good place to start with the annoying dumb ass questions.

I'm looking to build or buy a new system, and (as you'd guessed) I want good specs for little money. My budget is anywhere between 400 and 750 quid but ideally I don't want to be spending over 500 unless its really worth it.

I have masses of video files (about 600 gig) on hard drives so having more than one hard drive space would be nice. I've only ever had laptops so I'm not sure about desktop systems so tell me if i'm asking stupid questions.

I'd like a dvd writer and a decent size monitor (you'll hate to hear this but I'd prefer size over quality).

If you have any ideas about the best way to go about it, i.e, building a system myself, buying from a recommended shop etc, i'd be really grateful.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Are you in the US or somewhere else. If you are in the US, I can steer you in the right direction.

Hey guys..

Sorry for the long time before replying...literally the day after posting this thread my laptop had a major failure. I think it overheated and now the boot-up screen says "no operating system found"!!

The PXE boot agent (v 2.01 BIOS integrated) says "PXE-E61: Media **** failure, check cable".

Also what I think is the internal IDE is not sounding happy, that and the fan getting sun hot may be my problem. I'd like to get my laptop fixed as money is a bit tight for a new system at the mo and I don't wana buy a ****ty system with the money I do have.

Any ideas on how to fix my bad boy??

P.s Cheers so much for posting replies about the new system. I'll check em out when I get a chance....basically when my manager isn't around to stop me using the internet for "personal use". lol

Thanks

DJ

You should be able to replace the HD yourself ... but you may have to find a "dealer" for any other problems ... you just can't open the side pannel of a laptop and dive in and fix it. :(

Give us the make and modle of the laptop and we may be able to help. :thumb:

Seeing as I need a computer system desperately for work, study and general living I think I'd better seriously consider looking to buy a new desktop system ASAP especially seeing as my laptop sounds like a lost cause.

I've been looking at overclockers and some of the systems seem reasonably priced. I'm not a gamer so I'm not bothered about stupidly fantastic graphics cards, I just want a solid system with good general performance and space for some HDD. I'll also be needing a monitor-not bothered whether flat or crt or particular performance-sounds stupid--and i am, but i can always get a new monitor-don't really want to be buying a new system.

I'm up for building a system but as I don't have access to internet on a regular basis this could become a problem.

One more thing-what's this whole 64bit/32bit socket A stuff all about. I know that the newest systems are different from slightly older ones-so what should I be looking out for when buying??

Plus any other sites/good packages etc would be great.

Thanks again guys

Dan
