help on sound

Hmm I got the same basic prob as Herman. I dont have the errors, but I
cant play the windows sounds. I did some thinking and narrowed it down
to a Codec problem.

Checked the Audio Codec list in Device manager, all the core files
which you get on an XP install (imaadp32.acm, msadp32.acm, msg711.acm,
etc. etc.) are all gone. So I believe thats why I can no longer player
the wave sounds (windows/MSN/ICQ), got no proper audio compression
codec anymore. Trying the Realtek AC97 driver solution now.

Hi Mauzor,

Before doing anything drastic, go into Sounds in the Control Panel.
Click on Sounds and under Program Events, make sure that there is a Sound
cone next to some of the Program events in Windows. Not all events will have
Sounds.

When Windows is first installed, there is no Sound Scheme defined or
saved. That is up to the Individual.

Also before trying a certain Realtek AC97 driver solution, make sure you
have a Realtek Sound Chip installed. Otherwise, you may have problems and
also make sure you installed the correct Sound Drivers for a particular
Sound Chip.

Thanks for the heads up, thecreator,

I checked the sound menu thoroughly, and the cones are there alright
It makes no sense, it all used to work, and I have absolutely no ide
what happened to alter it into not working. Atm MSN doesnt give an
sounds anymore, nor does windows, nor does movies I play in my browser
Only things I play with mediaplayer and winamp and self-working games
give sound.

In the system device manager window, I checked the Audio Codecs tab..
I think I miss a lot of the core windows ACM files - which woul
explain why the windows related sounds no longer function. Anyway t
solve this? Any codecs that can replace/restore this?

And no the Realtek didnt work, since I got a different soundchip,
already updated that one, also to no avail. I keep having only fou
Codecs listed in Audiocompessioncodecs window (properties of Audi
Codecs).

Well any further suggestions would be greatly welcome as I have no clu
how to fix this.

Cheers,
Mauzo
