I Can't play system sounds

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 with onboard sound and Realtek AC97 Audio.

I can no longer play system sounds although I can play other music.

When I go into the control panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio Tab the
Midi Music Playback efault device is blank. When I select
Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synth from the drop down list and hit apply, it
will not be there when I go back into it. I have already
reinstalled Realtek AC97 Audio with no luck.

Any suggestions.
