No sound device

Hello

Windows [XPhome SP2] will not install a sound device.

The Realtek AC97 Audio driver installs without error
and in Device manager - Properties the
Audio
MIDI and
Mixer devices all show as working properly.

But there is no sound or sound device.

In DXdiag the Direct sound test shows- no driver.
The Direct Music test has 3 entries-
Ms Synth
MIDI and Mixer devices
and
Realtek AC97 Audio

Ms Synth shows - no driver
There is no MIDI device installed but the test runs without error.
Realtek AC97 Audio tests correctly without error.

I have tried several drivers from different sources.

How can i get Windows to install a sound device?

Did you check in Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices. Make sure no
Mute boxes
are checked.

Windows Audio service was disabled.
