Sound issues

I have Realtek AC 97 sound card. There have been no changes to my computer
except what update does BUT my sound mas disappeared. When I check it in the
Realtek Audio Control Panel, I have sound. In XP control panel it says my
sound card and my drivers are working fine, but no audio device. I run
DXDiag and it says no sound card. But when test direct music through the
Realtek Audio button I have music. I checked my hardware and the sound card
is there. I searched the Microsoft Knowledge base and it offered a patch
for an issue with a security update and Realtek which I ran to no avail. I
am lost--does anyone have any ideas?

Where did you get the Realtek drivers from, Windows Update or from the Sound
Card manufacture's web site?
If you used Windows Update then ditch the driver and download driver from
manufacture's web site.

The drivers came installed. So I will chuck them and re-install from
Realtek. Will let you know.

JS--un-istalled drivers and downloaded and re-installed from Realtek. I got
excited because Windows announced the new hardware but still no sound. any
other thoughts?

If it's a sound card, remove the drivers.
Shut down the PC an remove the card.
Power up and verify that Windows does not see any sound card.
Power down and reinstall the sound card.
Power up and when Windows identifies the new card, specify where the
driver file you downloaded is on your hard disk and then let Windows
install the new drivers from that location on the hard drive..

That was going to be my next option, (cause I hadn't thought of it until
now-duh); but ran PC Wizard and looked at the audio report and Ta Da -- the
process was stopped. I don't know how, but went into services, found it and
restarted it. Re-booted and got sound! Only after 7 really frustrating
days--took brain dead and your help, so thank you!!

You're welcome.

I have a new issue--again no sound, hardware is present and working fine,
nothing changed since my last post except Windows updated to SP 3. Checked
everything we mentioned before and everything is switched on and says
everything is working fine. BUT NO SOUND, NO Audio device found--even though
it shows up in device manager??? Again, all the information in the first
post is the same, except its SP3 now. Help!

Hi Seuss,

JUST GOOGLE IT! Sorry. I think I am funny. Just channeling
another posting. (Just Google it, the new RTFM.) :)

[Easy Fix] Here is an easy trick that fixes this stuff most
of the time. Go into your device manager and remove the
thing. Then reboot. The reboot will trigger Plug 'n Play and
most of the time it fixes it.

After removing it from the device manager and rebooting, if
it still does fix it, try reinstalling the driver.[/Easy Fix]

Did you try steps as I mentioned before?

Shut down the PC an remove the card.
Power up and verify that Windows does not see any sound card.
Power down and reinstall the sound card.
Power up and when Windows identifies the new card, specify where the
driver file you downloaded is on your hard disk and then let Windows
install the new drivers from that location on the hard drive..

If that doesn't work see if there are new drivers available that support
SP3.

Yep, did everything as you said before and just now the problem restarted.
The sound card is in device driver--are you saying windows doesn't see it
there? And I did do the download of new drivers from Realtek, got the found
noew hardware, etc but still no sound.

S

Seuss

Actually that is my standard answer to everyone!!

I re-installed the drivers and got the new hardware, etc but no sound. So
now I'm going to try your 1st fix. Will let you know!

After installing SP3 and discovered you had no sound,
did you do it (the entire process I posted previously) again?

That is what I meant to say, sorry if there was any confusion.
