ethernet controller issue - wizard cannot find.

hi, i posted previously but need to clarify.
my device mgr indicates no driver installed for my ethernet controller (NOT
the ethernet adapter) as well as the video and audio controller (i can't hear
sound from my media player either.)

it seems that the controller and adapter are two different things - the
ethernet adapter is above the ethernet controller in the device mgr, but only
the controller has a yellow question mark (shown as under 'other devices.')
along with the audio and video controller. i understand that an ethernet
controller has two other names: a "network card" and a "internet card." so
armed with this information, and to try to bypass this issue, i was told to
get a pci ethernet adapter and install it. it did and it did not work. this
attempt was made only after i downloaded and installed drivers for the
controller, and motherboard - which did not solve the problem either.

i run xp (sp2) via a msi rs480m2 series motherboard (model #7093) and got
the drive from the msi site, along with the realtek ac'97 driver (and a lan
10/100 driver). i have a realtek alc658c audio controller/card that it is
built in to the motherboard. more info about my system - according to belarc:
network drives - none detected, communications - realtek rtl8139/810x family
fast ethernet nic (that i am NOT having problems with) and my soundcard is a
creative sb x-fi.

i also downloaded the ac'97 audio codecs (and hd codexes) from the realtek
site, installed them to no effect.

so why am i getting the yellow marks in my device mgr and how can i correct
this issue? i believe i have downloaded the correct drives for both the
mainboard and the realtek ethernet controller, but outside verification would
be useful - as well as other suggestions on what to do. jeez - i just want to
connect to the internet again.... (and hear audio on my media player).... all
this trouble came about after i ran malwarebytes and deleted crap off my
system.
(oh, and thanks for your help.)

ps: since the missing ethernet drive is ALSO grouped with a missing audio
and video driver, i am assuming that they are all related to each other,
since they ALL are under 'other devices' in the device mgr.
