Sound problems

im having trouble with my sound device, when i go in to Control Panel and
click on sounds, speach, and othe devices then click on sound and audio
devices, on the volume tab everything is in grey so i cannot select anything,
when i click on the sound tab and select a sound to play an error
appears...."Windows cannot play sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP
Error.wav.Your sound card may be in use. Can anyone give some advice?????????
 
Check to see if your Windows Audio service is running. We have had several
PC's that multiple services are failing on. One of the services is Windows
Audio.
