Command & Startup Sounds disappear, sound recorder spoil

Hi

My sounds for all the commands like start windows etc. are not playing. My
MSN Messenger sounds work, MP3 player sounds work. But not my windows default
sounds. In control panel, the changing of sounds are greyed out. I also
realised my sound recorder is not working. Record button is greyed out.

My sound card is working fine, cause my MSN and my normal songs are still
playing.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks!!!!

No,

Tried it but does not work. Added the reg entries in.

The First Question of Troubleshooting: What changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

If you can't figure it out, you might try a System Restore to when things
worked if this was a sudden change.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

Hmmm... tried restoring. I think my dad did something to the desktop and it
happened quite a while ago... so its hard to trace back...any workarounds?

I have no intentions to format my computer. If there is solution to it, then
i will live with it :(

Since it happened quite a while ago, System Restore isn't an option. You'd
cause more damage. Since I don't know what your Dad did, I can't guess what
the "something to the desktop" was.

You might try uninstalling your sound card from Device Manager and then
reinstalling it. See below for general drivers information.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.
