I have a Dell Dimension 9100, Media Center. I just did a restore with the
cd, Device manager shows I have all the drivers {no yellow} Here is the
problem, I have no sound. I go to control panel/ sound/ and click on a sound
for something its ok, nothing is greyed out. Go to browse/ media pick sound
preview plays but no sound. It is like I have no speakers hooked up. Speakers
are good, tried in different computer and works fine. Used another set of
speakers which are also good but no sound. Play movie and no sound. play cd
no sound.
I also installed different sound card and the drivers were found but
still no sound.
Installed another hard drive from a different computer which also has all
the drivers but still same problem . No sound.
So what do we try ...I did get the drivers from the dell website
Thanks in advance

Is there a mixer or volume control panel ? Are the speakers muted
or the sliders down near the bottom ?

If you go Start:Run and enter "dxdiag", you can run the DirectX diagnostic.
There should be a sound tab there, and a test button.

Does Dell itself have a diagnostic boot option ? I thought some
Dells have hardware test software.

So if you plug the speakers, into the front headphone jack, does
everything then work ?

The Dimension 9100 is an HDAudio machine. That means the motherboard
has a CODEC chip soldered to it, that handles sound. It wouldn't be
a separate sound card.

The fact you have three sound entries in Dxdiag is a bit strange.
Are two of those related to failed installs perhaps ?

If you look in the Sound control panel, how many choices for hardware
devices for output do you find ? The Sound control panel allows selection
of a hardware device for playback. For example, I have two sound cards,
so I have two choices for playback in the Sound control panel. I was
going to suggest checking that next, if you still couldn't find
the sound.

So right now, you do have audio on your headphone jack. If you stopped
playing with it, you could plug the speakers into it like that. Otherwise,
I'd look at the Sound control panel, and see how many choices there are,
and whether those choices correspond to actual sound hardware.

Some people do not realize, when they upgrade to a modern video card,
some of those have "sound-over-HDMI". That sound solution is considered
a playback device. There should be a separate entry for it in the Sound
control panel. You need an HDMI receiver device of some sort, to get the
sound. (Some TV sets with built-in speakers can do that, via their HDMI
input jack.)

So if you're happy to have some sound, then leave it alone. If you're
not happy, and want it to work perfectly, the next step would be
examining the Sound control panel, and seeing what hardware that
Windows thinks you've got.

I think this is a STAC92xx driver for your model. You probably already
have a copy of this.

Paul, That is a lot for me to understand but this is a update. Yes sound
works thru the front head phones. This is not my PC { maybe it never work} so
I pulled out the sound card and it is a creative lab sound blaster live 24
bit SBO410,{ that is what I remember from memory} so I download the driver
and ran it and got a error saying I have to update my operating system to
Vista, So I think some one put that sound card in and its for Vista,,....
Next step I will find a card laying around and put that one in and see what
happens.
Thanks for your help.
PS if this was my PC I would just hook speakers to the front headphone and
be happy.
Thanks Whimpie and I will let you know what happens in a couple days

My assumption was based on the usage of motherboard sound. There is a Sigmatel
STAC92xx family CODEC on there. That is what that driver is for.

You're telling me, a PCI sound card is present, and there is a cable
running from a header on the sound card, to the front panel jacks.
That almost sounds like a factory option of some sort.

That also means, there are two sound outputs on the back of the computer.
The SB0410 in a PCI slot. The STAC92xx will be a set of separate jacks
in the I/O plate area. Unplug the headphones from the front of the computer,
then test *both* of the green jacks on the back of the computer for sound
(the one on the SB0410 and the one on the STAC92xx).

Also, in the Sound control panel, there should be two devices present,
if you have drivers installed for both of them. Make sure the Sound
panel is set, for the green Lineout jack you're expecting to use.

*******

Try SB0410 here.

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Value/SE/LS and
Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit XP and Windows Vista Pack 1.04.0077 63.39MB

http://ccftp.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/AVP/10125/0x1CD74550/SB24_VTDRV_LB_1_04_0077.exe

According to this, an SB0410 is

http://pciids.sourceforge.net/pci.ids

1102 Creative Labs
0007 CA0106 Soundblaster
1102 1006 SB0410 SBLive! 24-bit

In the P17.inf file of the Creative installer, I can see this line, which matches.

%CTAudio_Device.Dev.amd64%=CTAudio_Device,PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0007&SUBSYS_10061102

So my guess is, that driver should install. That is, if you want
to bother trying it.
