Have Dell dimension 3000, computer crashed, had to restart, no audio,
followed all troubleshoot, still nothing. Yes, it's correctly in plug in,
speaks work on another computer. Device manager state" device working
properly, location: unknown. When I click on the detail tab, it's saids
"root/ media/ms_mmdrv
When i update the driver, it states "this is the best one for your system",
(if so, then why is it not working"
At first it was trying to play audio through majic jack, but I stop that,
still no sound, and did try to upgrade Legacy Driver, nothing as website for
dell is helping me.
and I'm tried of trying.
Also, did look in the System area to see if Sound was on, it is. Video is
coming out find. But no sound. And I do not have the mute button selected.

Thanks,
Sara

Dimension 3000 appears to use this for sound. (The following link is
on three lines, but it should all be pasted together into the browser.
My news server won't allow me to leave it as one long line.)

"Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio, v.5.12.01.4060, A18"

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?spf=Dimension&ssysid=DIM_CEL_3000&ssysn=3000&s=gen&
c=ca&l=en&cs=&ec=&ira=False&cat=sup&subcat=dyd&rf=all&evl=&nk=f&k=dimension+3000+drivers&
p=1&nf=&rpp=12&sort=K&~srd=False&ipsys=False&advsrch=False&p=1

The download file is 7MB and is at this link. File is for
a "Dimension 3000" running WinXP or Win2K.

formatcnt=1&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=106193

This is the file. There is support for a number
of different sound solutions in this file, and
they're all "AC'97" type (motherboard sound).

You have to make sure that sound is enabled in
the BIOS setup screen. If the sound is enabled,
then you should be able to install a driver for
it. The company making your device is Analog Devices,
and the specific brand name is "SoundMax".

On my computer, which is running WinXP SP3, I can go
to Start:Run and enter "dxdiag". Press return, to start
that program. A window should appear. It has a number
of tabs along the top. Now, I have two sound devices
in my computer, and there is a "Sound 1" and "Sound 2"
tab. In each instance of those tabs, if I click the
tab, the "Device ID" has a value. In my case, one
of my sound devices is a PCI card, while the other
is (motherboard) HDaudio. In your case, there should be
some mention of AC'97, an older motherboard technology.

This is an example of a DXDIAG sound tab. There is
a test button there - you can test and listen to see
if there is a response. Remember to check the
volume slider for the sound, and that the sound is
not muted, before you test.

If you have more than one Sound tab in dxdiag, it means
you potentially have more than one sound device inside
the computer. You have to make sure the computer
speakers are connected to your current hardware sound
choice. For example, I have two green jacks on the back
of my computer, one from a PCI card, one from HDaudio.
I'm plugged into the one, which I've selected in
the Sound control panel. If I want to use the other sound
device, I have to remember to switch the selection in
the Sound control panel, in order to use it. So
on my computer, I get silence if I forget to set
up my Sound control panel correctly. On a computer
with only one sound device and one sound tab in DXDIAG,
this is less likely to happen.
