Windows Sound Events Don't Play - Everything Else Does

This one is baffling me...

Windows sound events (restore, recycle, exit windows, etc.) do not play, either in the setting window for sound events or when applicable actions take place... but those same *.wav files will play in Media Player. Audio from various sources (Internet radio, Real, Quicktime, what-have-you) all play, but no systems sounds do. Sound theme is set as "Windows Default" and there are no hardware conflicts (on-board Realtek AC97 Audio) in Device Manger.

I reinstalled the drivers that came with the MoBo (Abit IS7). It had run fine up to today...
