Headphones dont work

I recently installed XP Sp 2 and when I try to use the headphones the is no
sound. I had an audio cable connected so I could use both speakers or
headphones (a problem on sp 1) but no go. Any suggestions??

Not really enough information to go on. What are your headphones

I want to use the headphone connection in the front of the CD Rom player.

If you have a Dell computer, it will not work for Dell reroutes the headphone
jack to behind the flap on the front of your PC case. Just lift it up and
you'll
see the jack next to 2 USB jacks.
