i am running xp pro with sp2.my question is this.can i use the headphone
jack on cd-rom and still keep the speakers coupled to back of computer. this
would be handy for listening my music or dvd. when the family is asleep ,i
could turn speakers off and not disturb them. i do not want to have to
change the cables behind computer every time. is a splitter cable available
to plug in behind computer and therefore switch from headphones to speakers
at will. i have tried cd rom headphone plug and there is no sound

There should be a separate jack on the back of your PC for headphones
and desktop speakers. You can use both of them, and turn down the
volume on your speakers but still use the headphone. The headphone
jack on your CD-Rom may not work even if you change the speaker
setup. Make sure the headphone volume control is not Muted.
Rightclick the volume icon (next to clock)>Open Volume Control.

You may even have a Headphone jack on your Main speaker ad it will
automatically shut the speakers off when the headphone is plugged in.
