Find Previous operating system was?

To be able to uninstall an old version of Norton antivirus (2000) to install
as new
one (2005) I need to run their uninstall utility by using the compatibility
mode.
This is an old computer (but new to me) running on XP. How do I find out
what the previous operating system was to be able to run the utility in
compatibility mode??

Norton 2000 would have been a Windows 98/ME era OS. So, if
you have to set some compatibility just select W98.

Have you visited www.symantec.com to see their advice on how
to use their program?

While on the subject of compatibility mode, can someone tell me exactly how
that works? If I have XP and the software program was written for Win95 or
Win98, can I set XP to run it on WinXP?

Thanks.

It depends on the program. Most such programs will run under
Windows XP without using compatibility mode. Others require
compatibility mode. A few (in particular, most disk utilities)
won't run at all.

In particular it is accounting software, and it does work on Windows 98, but
I think it was for Windows 95. If I wanted to use it with compat. mode
assuming it would work, how would I set it up.

Thanks.

Right-click on a shortcut to it, choose properties and go to the
compatibility tab.

But don't do this until you've tried just running it without
doing anything special.

Also please specify exactly what program it is (name and version
number). Someone here may have experience with it and can tell
you whether it will run and how. Further, on the machine it's
installed on, run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp.
That should provide information on its comp[atibility.

All Programs - Accessories - Program compatibility Wizard. Browse to
the program, then select to run it in compatibility mode for Win98 or
whatever.
