I am running XP media center with SP3 and IE8, which is fully updated. I also
have Norton 360 running for security.
I had experienced a problem viewing Microsoft web pages only, where
some pages had content overlapping and on other Microsoft sites links where
not selectable. I uninstalled IE8, on a number of occasions along with IE7
and SP3 and reinstalled while I disabled my firewall and antivirus. Nothing I
did resolved the problem.
After two and a half hours on the phone with a Microsoft technician the
problem was resolved. The technician went further than my previous attempts
by totally disabling my Norton security (not just the firewall and antivirus)
and uninstalling IE8 and IE7. Also he uninstalled every update for each IE
version. Both versions where then reinstalled after reboots in administrative
mode with Internet connectivity (Pressing F8 on reboot gets you there). IE7
was reinstalled without retrieving any updates since IE8 contains all needed
updates. IE8 was installed after another reboot in administrative mode (F8).
Then rebooting in normal mode any updates required where obtain through the
Windows update. Problem resolved.
My reason for writing is that I find it hard to believe that Microsoft
doesn't have a paper or a bulletin for this problem with the appropriate
steps to take for a proper resolution. They seem to be aware of the problem
because it is specifically mentioned in the preliminary phone tree messages.
God I hate phone trees. If a paper existed then I would have taken care of
the problem myself without spending two and a half hours on the phone sharing
my computer with a Microsoft tech. Firefox doesn't seem to have any of the
display problems or conflicts with third party security software that IE7 or
8 does.
