IE8 update and slow start up

I installed the IE8 update to ward off the conficker virus, but immediately
it completely slowed down my computer. It takes 10 - 20 minutes for the
computer to fully start. I did uninstall SP3 and then IE8 and am now running
IE7, but it still takes about 10 - 20 minutes to get the computer fully
running and the firewall gets turned to off each time I reboot.

Installing IE8 will not "ward off the conficker virus."

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the affects of a hijackware
infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!

2. WinXP ONLY!! => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I have done the malware scan (full) from Microsoft several times. Nothing
amiss shows up. I will try #2.
