Issues after installing IE8

I recently did a clean install of win xp pro with sp3 and upon
installing IE7, the computer was booting fine and quickly. I rebooted
twice after installation of IE7. I then updated my machine via windows
update and downloaded only updates for IE7. I rebooted. After that I
updated to IE8 and after installation, I rebooted. Now when the boot
screen with the progress bar that scrolls to the right goes away, my
screen goes snowy and stays that way for a few seconds.

Has anyone else had this trouble?
