Fax modem problems

My boss is having issues with receiving faxes on his computer. It's
late, and I don't recall what modem he has in his machine right now...
I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue. I can tell you that
his computer runs XP Pro and is up-to-date with service packs, etc.

My questions are:

1. What modem do you recommend, if it's hardware-related?
2. Should I go with a non-MS fax program? He just wants to receive
faxes on his machine, so WinFax Pro is a bit of overkill, but could the
issue be software-related?

Make sure that the modem is connected to a straight analog phone line and
not a digital one from the office phone system. A digital phone jack puts
out too many volts for an analog modem and could damage the computer as
well.
