As it happens I have that model and had problems getting it to work after a
clean install of Windows XP.
The solution was to uninstall the scanner software and disconnect the
scanner. Then go to the HP web site and download and install the newest
software and finally to reconnect the scanner.

My first attempt, which failed , was when I used the original CD which came
with the scanner. You should also install the software before connecting the
scanner.
