Try running an online virus scan at
www.antivirus.com or
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
If it finds something, use Google with keywords to call up Symantec fix sheets and
tend to that.
You can do a repair install or an Inplace Upgrade.
To do this reboot to the BIOS and reset the first boot device to be CD-ROM, place
you W2K CD into the tray, and reboot. At the beginning of the boot be prepared to
press any key to boot with the CD-ROM. The files used on the 4 boot diskettes will
be loaded, and then you will be asked to choose "repair", or run setup. I your case
I would choose to Install. After a few more prompts, you will be asked to choose to
complete the install or to "repair". This time choose "REPAIR". When you finish, you
will need to reinstall SP4 again, and all hotpatches. I suggest you download the
network version of SP4, place it in a folder, filed in "My Documents", and run it
from there. Afterward run Windows Update. One think that we have come to find out is
that, we need to Actually read the explanations of what each Hotpatch is needed for.
Me, I would not carte blanche install "all" hotpatches. I only used the ones that
effect a particular box. If you run through this NG and some of the others, you will
see that continuously that there is a problem with speed of the computer has been
effected by installing "a" hotpatch. Fir that reason, I usually install hotpatches
in smaller groups, beginning with critical updates, then others. Usually broken down
into three groups, I don't load all of the "all languages" updates, because I don't
use them, and many of hackers rampant behavior comes out of China, Germany, and
other third world countries, where the law enforcement is very underfunded. In
Chinas case out of all computers only approximately 2% of the operating systems are
not pirated. And the government, in this case, condone the behavior. Sorry for
rambling.
Hope I may have helped.

I use W2K Pro/SP4 on a non-networked computer. When I try
to access "Automatic Updates" from the Control Panel, the
applet is greyed out and unavailable. I checked "Services"
and made sure that Auto Updates was set to "automatic" but
the service shows as "stopped." When hitting the "start"
button, I receive the following error message: "Could not
start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 1053, The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion".
