Auto Updates Won't Enable

When I click on the Windows "Automatic Updates" applet in
the Control Panel, the dialog box is greyed out and
unavailable. I checked "Services" and Automatic Updates is
set to automatic, but it is stopped. When I hit the start
button, I receive the following error message. "Could not
start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 1053, The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion". Can anyone help?
