Service "Automatic Updates" does not start

I have XP SP3 on this computer. The service 'Automatic Updates' does not want
to start. If I set it to automatic startup type, it will never start, but
will show "Starting" for the status in the Services console. If I set it to
manual startup and start it manually from the Services console, it attempts
to start it for a while, and then gives this error message: "Could not start
the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did
not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." The status
then shows "Starting". If anybody could tell me what I can do to get it
working properly I would appreciate it very much. I cannot access Windows
Update without it.
