Not if you want to keep the data. Didn't you say you were about to install a
new copy of xp, right?
Rubbish. Fdisk /mbr does not alter the contents of a disk in any
manner. It ONLY affects the main boot sector. I do wish people would
learn how things work before mouthing off with all sorts of scare
stories.

You may be right, here, David. But I used that method before, and it did NOT
get rid of a nasty boot sector virus. That's the reason for the debug
script. YMMV

I'll bet you did not boot cold from a clean write protected floppy.

Site could not be found. I will still maintain that YOU did not boot
from a power off state from a clean write protected floppy.
If it makes you feel good, then no problem for me...........

Trouble is, I've used the same boot floppy for about 40 new builds and the
problem didn't repeat. Like I said, the times I've had a problem is with a
used HD that was experiencing weirdness...........the site I gave you is
where I got the debug script, and I've used it many times. Sorry the site is
down..............Your method seems fine to try if you're trying to save the
data on a disc, but mine is better if you want to KNOW there is nothing left
on that puppy!
