dvd drive not working

I have an older Sony Vaio whose DVd drive died (wouldn't open). I replaced the drive with a Pioneer DVR-710. Now I am having the following problems:

1: Doesn't auto start cd or dvds

2: my cd drive won't auto start any more

3: when I manually load a dvd I can view the menu but the movie doesn't play (just a big red X)
it will play cd's but I have to manually load them

Some info the dvd drive is set to master and the cd to slave.

Before changing the drive the cd drive worked fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check that the IDE cable & power connectors are connected OK to the drive.
