New DVD drive hangs XP

I am replacing a Pioneer DVD/CD RO drive with a Pioneer DVD/CD RW drive.
When I boot with the new drive installed, Windows hangs during the splash
screen.
I also have another CD and DVD drive in my system (total of 3). They all
read CDs OK but wont recognize DVDs, and recently won't burn CDs. Hence the
new drive.
Both Pioneer drives were configured as Master.
When I configure the new one as Slave, the system boots, but then Windows
doesn't recognize the drive, nor are the options presented for me to install
in manually. When I configure it as Cable Select, it hangs like the Master
configuration.
Putting the old Pioneer drive back restores my system again, with the same
problems as before.
Can anyone help me?

Simplify things. Just put one DVD in and see if it works. Then
you'll know the hardware you have it good at least. New hardware can
be defective. Its not a gimmie.

Thanks for responding Al, but I thought I would try some things before
sending the unit back.

Problem solved. There is nothing wrong with the new unit.

In a nutshell, my problem was caused by how I originally cabled the unit.
The Pioneer DVD/R unit I replaced was plugged into an IDE controller board.
My computer was looking for it to be plugged into the motherboard, where I
already had a Lite-on DVD/RW drive.
Evidently, my system doesn't like two DVD/RW drives. When I disconnected
the Lite-On drive, shunted the new Pioneer DVD/RW drive as a Master, and
hooked it up to the motherboard cable, everything worked out fine.

It should not really matter the number of DVD RW drives. If you have
IDE drives, you need to follow the correct cabling / jumpers
settings. If you choose Cable Select then all drives to be connected
on the same IDe cable must be set to Cable Select. If you choose
Master / Slave, then you need to set one drive to master and the
second to slave.
