Dear Microsoft - UAC (.png & wmp) issues should be addressed.

OK, a new direction.

Could everyone that is experiencing the issue, please reply with your
Computer Manufacturer (IE: HP, Compaq, Dell, etc), your model number and your
OS?

Mine is an HP v6210us Vista Home Premium.

Hello all,

I have the same problem as JK. When I create a new user, and use it as
"standard user", png are displayed right, but with my admin account, it still
doesn't work.

I tried to fully uninstall iTunes and Quicktime, then re-attributed the
default program for png files to IE7 (iexplore.exe). Result is, when I
double-click on a PNG file, it opens with IE7, then IE7 asks for allowing the
use of ActiveX.

If I refuse, everything stop here.

If I accept, a new ie7 window opens, and the procedure starts from the
begining, with asking for activeX, and so on.

If there is a png file in a web page (not directly the png file), the red x
comes like described by JK and others.

I believe the PNG files are processed like a programm, or like a application
(like .swf files), but not like an image (jpg) anymore.

But I have no idea how to fix this.

Does that help ?

By the way, I have Vista Ultimate in French, on a dual core 6700, 2.6GHrz,
with 3GB Ram.
Please forgive me for my poor english.
Thx
Elguimauk

JK,

That might be it. Perhaps you see any ACCESS DENIED errors when loading a .PNG in IE?

Type this in the address bar and press ENTER:

about:Tabs

(The about:Tabs shows a .PNG file.)

Is there a way that i could re-install (uninstall-install) IE7 that would
restore the registry to it's original state for ie7. So that the registry
entries for HKCR\MIME\Database\Content Type\image is restored with it's
entries for png values ?

addendum to previous post for re-installing IE7 is so that the registry keys
listed below are restored:

JK,

The ACCESS DENIED errors (for all of the registry keys you mentioned) appears here as well, but .PNGs display fine in IE, with or without UAC enabled. I'm clueless ATM...shall post back if I find anything.

Yes the problem went away when I setup another user "FGHJK"
I then went back to original user "CVBNM" and made "FGHJK" administrator and
"CVBNM" standard user. restarted pc and original user "CVBNM" still would not
display png images :((

I've restored "CVBNM" admin rights and "FGHJK" standard user, my "CVBNM"
account also administrates my lan PCs and servers.

BTW - today's (11/13/07) MS updates for Vista and Office Pro 2007 has really
slowed down my IE, like the browser is waiting for every data object to be
screened before loading pages. This page took 2 minutes to load.

I await further instructions . . . .

Hi JK,

It appears that the registry permissions for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive is messed up, as "ACCESS DENIED" error is seen in many areas in HKCU. Can you create a new user account and _test_ if the .PNG problem exists there also?

I'm glad there's finally postings out here regarding this problem! I thought
it was caused by some program I downloaded! I've been having this problem
for almost 6 months! Purchased my HP dv9000 with Vista Home Premium mid-Feb
2007. Problem began happening in June. When I first started searching about
this problem, there wasn't alot out there (at least where I was looking) The
admin account works fine, and my husband is also a user on this pc, and his
account works fine also! Firefox also works fine!
Let's hope microsoft gets on board here and helps us out!

I'm having the same problem. Well, not exactly.
I'm using IE 7, and it recently stopped displaying .png files, oh and
Google Maps causes a stack overflow. I'm not sure exactly when it stopped,
because I mainly use Firefox, except when I find a page that doesn't display
exactly right.

The main difference is that this problem is occurring on my XP SP2 machine,
and not my Vista box.

I've cleared my cache, reinstalled IE7, reinstalled Quicktime, and I even
tried installing Silverlight.

posting here to increase volume of the thread.

waiting for microsoft to patch with WU i suppose, as the current patch is
too demanding for most users to EVEN TRY to fix it, and since it doesn't
work, why bother?

is there not a real fix out there yet? this is really baffling, i find it
hard to believe that this problem is so OLD and not fixed yet.

(e-mail address removed) if you have a fix, i'd appreciate it.

Hi Kamal,

This has not been resolved for me either.

No idea why MS is not responding to this thread. This issue seems to have
happened to many Vista users. It could be happening to many more and they
might not even know it...yet.

I've just been running with UAC turned off and everything works fine. I
don't want to run in this mode forever, though.

A couple of days ago, I "googled" "png wmp uac" and got about 60+ websites
pointing to this thread. Seems that a popular issue like this one, would get
some attention from MS. Also, wouldnt you think that some MS employees would
be having this issue on their own computers as well?

Me too I had the "X-red" problem with IE7 in Vista.
Some days ago, I updated Vista (automatic update) ad I installed
OpenOfficeOrg 2.3 (italian) ... and the problem wa magically desappeard! It
was because of Open Office?

Z

zachd [MSFT]

It's an interesting question why I at least haven't heard of anyone inside
Microsoft running into this issue. I'd be interested in running into one of
them, since that would presume that a local box was having this problem and
was available for debugging. I'd like that. =\

Just to clarify so we don't start off on the wrong foot:
No idea why MS is not responding to this thread.
You might want to read the Newsgroup Expectations of Service here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/conduct/default.mspx
, specifically "Microsoft does not offer formal support for the communities
you'll find here." I'm here as a friend. =)

What is the sum total of your problems?
* Is PNG broken in IE?
* Is WMP broken?
* Is QuickTime installed?
If you try the registry merge, what keys are blocked?
What software has been installed to your afflicted system? There should be
a common subset of installed software on afflicted systems that should
likely isolate out to what might have triggered this.

I'm mostly interested in people who have a broken WMP, and knowing what's
going on with their systems. A simply registry monitor trace of what
happens when you try (and fail) to launch WMP, for example, would be really
great data.

For what it's worth, I don't know many WMP-centric people who typically
track this Administration newsgroup. I tend to try to contribute as a
friend to the vista.music_pictures_video and windowsmedia.player newsgroups,
but I don't know of anyone WMP-centric who would likely have stumbled across
this. I saw it mentioned in a post in music_pictures_video, for example. =\

Thanks,
-Zach

JSandPC

Hi Zach, Nice to talk to you again.

Thanks for the link to the MS Expectations info. I posted this type of
thread (Suggestion for Microsoft) so that someone on the "inside" might take
an interest...It must have worked, because now we have you!

Also, the reason, I posted in the Administration, Accounts & Passwords
category is because, in my opinion, the UAC may be the root cause. It's just
a guess, but everyone that I have talked to has turned off UAC to temporarily
resolve these issues or have created a new user. In either case, the issues
went away.

As for your questions...

Is PNG broken in IE? - Yes, I cannot view .png images in Internet Explorer
unless I turn off UAC or run IE as Administrator. Also, IE works on my guest
account (even with UAC enabled).

Is WMP broken? - Yes, WMP will not open unless I turn off UAC or run WMP as
Administrator. Also, WMP works on my guest account (even with UAC enabled).

Is Quicktime installed? - Yes. I have since uninstalled it in an attempt to
correct the issue, but it didnt work. I reinstalled it a couple of weeks ago.

What software is installed on the afflicted system? Since this system has
been affliced with both these issues for 10 months and more software has been
installed since the issues developed, I will attempt to list only the
software that was installed prior to noticing the issues.

Quicktime
MS Office 2000 Pro was installed, but I recently upgraded to Office 2007 Pro.
Macromedia (Adobe) Flash Player
Adobe AR Reader 8
Macromedia (Adobe) Shockwave
Java Runtime (Sun) 1.6.0_03
Microsoft Sync Center
AVG Free Edition
Windows Defender

A note of interest. I had an issue with Java and had to re-install another
version. This was shortly after Vista was released and I think Sun had some
issues with the previous version

As far as the registry merge, I assume you are speaking of Ramesh's png
association registry fix. I don't really know what keys it is failing on,
but it does indeed fail.

As far as the process monitor, I will need to download and install one and
then turn UAC back on. I have only turned UAC on a few times since this
problem has occured. The only reason I have turned it on is to see if a
Windows Update may have resolved the issues.

Thanks again Zach for taking the time to help us and for taking an interest
in this thread.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking I'd get more responses from people in this
groups or more data, but -- there wasn't a lot of good data mined there. =\

What's the association for PNG set to currently? Does setting it to Photo
Gallery fix IE?
IE/WMP working seems to confirm that it's an HKCU corruption/issue.

Ideally I'd like to get the IE/PNG issue working so we can focus on WMP.

So far these are suspect:
HKCU\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/x-png
HKCU\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/png
HKCU\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\image/png
for IE's issue. What are the subkeys/values there?

Hey everyone. I was shocked to find that so many other people were having the
same problems as me.

Enviroment
---------
Windows Vista
IE7
2GB of RAM
Intel Core Duo 2.8GHz

My Problems
---------
Can't display PNG images
Can't display WMP videos
Can't display SWF animations

I have no idea what caused this. One day IE7 jsut stopped working correctly.
The*only* major thing I did prior to this was install and then un-install
quicktime (iTunes).

My Solution
---------
I tried dozens of .reg fixes with no luck. I tried clearing cache,
re-installing quicktime, repairing IE7. Well... you get the idea. Somebody
told me to run IE as an Administrator. I was supprised that my functionality
was restored. So I decided to digg deeper. And I ran two Process Monitors
which took a snapshot of my memory both with IE running in normal and
elevated mode. What I found was, when you run IE in elevated mode, it reads
the prefs from HKCR.. NOT HKCU. I then filtered both capture logs to check
for NAME NOT FOUND against anything with "png" in it's path. Sure enough,
everything that refered to "png" within the HKCU was gone. Not locked out
with bad permissions, but completely gone.

So I simple exported all the .png pngfile keys from the ROOT, into the
CURRENT USER. Hey presto, I now have PNG functionality restored in my
un-elevated IE7.

FIX: http://www.wezcrozier.com/png-fix-ie7-vista.zip

* I can't guarantee this will work. Other .reg fixes seem to concentrate in
fixing the png keys at the ROOT level. Which already present for me, because
I could see PNG's when IE ran with elevated permissions.

* Also, the same thing was screwing up my swf and wmv playback!

Let me know if this helps you guys out.

Cheers,

Wez

FIX: http://www.wezcrozier.com/png-fix-ie7-vista.zip

* I can't guarantee this will work. Other .reg fixes seem to
concentrate in fixing the png keys at the ROOT level. Which already
present for me, because I could see PNG's when IE ran with elevated
permissions.

* Also, the same thing was screwing up my swf and wmv playback!

Let me know if this helps you guys out.

Cheers,

Wez

Please refer to my thread (december 2007) with Ramesh, there is a wealth of
data in it.

Ramesh was stumped in the end and has not replied since.

BTW - this affects everthing that tries to display a png and the fact that
hkcu/mime does not exist in my registry.

There's generally no reinstall for any Vista subcomponents short of a Vista
reinstall, sorry. But that should install over the top of itself fine...

Is there a way that i could re-install (uninstall-install) IE7 that would
restore the registry to it's original state for ie7. So that the registry
entries for HKCR\MIME\Database\Content Type\image is restored with it's
entries for png values ?

Ramesh said:
JK,

The ACCESS DENIED errors (for all of the registry keys you mentioned)
appears here as well, but .PNGs display fine in IE, with or without UAC
enabled. I'm clueless ATM...shall post back if I find anything.

Yes the problem went away when I setup another user "FGHJK"
I then went back to original user "CVBNM" and made "FGHJK" administrator
and
"CVBNM" standard user. restarted pc and original user "CVBNM" still would
not
display png images :((

I've restored "CVBNM" admin rights and "FGHJK" standard user, my "CVBNM"
account also administrates my lan PCs and servers.

BTW - today's (11/13/07) MS updates for Vista and Office Pro 2007 has
really
slowed down my IE, like the browser is waiting for every data object to
be
screened before loading pages. This page took 2 minutes to load.

I await further instructions . . . .

Hi JK,

It appears that the registry permissions for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive
is messed up, as "ACCESS DENIED" error is seen in many areas in HKCU.
Can you create a new user account and _test_ if the .PNG problem exists
there also?

JK,

That might be it. Perhaps you see any ACCESS DENIED errors when
loading a .PNG in IE?

Type this in the address bar and press ENTER:

about:Tabs

(The about:Tabs shows a .PNG file.)

Right, my questions are an extension to the data you've previously provided
and weren't specifically asked by Ramesh. If you do have this specific set
of data, I would appreciate those specific factoids. =)

I don't expect you to have any of those HKCU settings. It is my personal
opinion that setting those is an extremely bad practice. I had long ago
thought about setting those on XP in order to provide for per-user
associations for multimedia file types, and realized that those was a
horrible plan, since the system thus deriving from HKCR settings would end
up with a ghoulash of HKCU-application-a settings and HKLM-application-b
settings, which in my personal opinion is not wise nor sustainable.

I would suspect that you *don't* have HKCU settings here. That would then
lead to the next question - what are the subkeys and values for:
HKCR\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/x-png
HKCR\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/png
HKCR\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\image/png
? But, please, all the questions I've asked have answers that are valuable
to me, so I would appreciate your good faith efforts in addressing them. =)

Thanks,
-Zach
