Hi Alex,

Do you have QuickTime installed by chance?

Hello all -

I am in the same boat. Same UAC problem - seemingly came out of nowhere.
Running as administrator is sufficient for now but a pain to confirm
launching IE with admin privileges every time.

I've tried all the fixes everyone suggested on this and other threads and no
success.

HELP!!!

I also have problems with png images not displaying as well as having the
"Stack overflow at line: 0" error message when trying to access google maps
(uses png images).

Tried the reg merge but ran into the "not able to complete because of
running processes". Also checked reg and display inline images which is set
to yes.

Turning off UAC did the trick but will not continue in such a mode.

Running IE7 as administrator cleared up both problems, but I do not know
what type of vulnerability I leave myself open to by running IE as admin. Is
there a down side to this ?

In my case this seemed to start about the same time I installed WHS on my
lan and the server connector app requested that I update my desktop user
password to be the same as my server user password. May be just a
coinsidence, updates from MS and other 3rd party apps come in on a daily
basis :((

I had QT installed, removing it did not solve my png/IE7 problem. The fix
suggested in the Apple thread did not work for me.

I have solved my problem. IE7 needs to read the values of certain registry
keys in order to display png graphic images. Somehow those keys had become
owner-less, and the value in keys without owners cannot be accessed.
Unfortunately, IE7 wasn't setting an error in any of the event view logs, so
there was no way to determine which registry keys it was failing to access.
Some sharp VB-scripter could probably write something which would step
through the registry and set the ownership of just the keys which required
them, but that's not me. I have documented my method for doing a bulk
re-ownership of the registry branches here:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...f2bf0/2cddfb30921f4416?tvc=1#2cddfb30921f4416

Result: I now have png images appearing correctly in IE7. Hope this helps
someone else.

I have the .png problem but NOT the WMP issue on XP SP2.

Well after much consideration, I decided to turn off UAC today. Immediately

I really do want to take advantage of the extra added security that UAC
offers, but I also need to have a working OS. I will operate this way until
someone (MS) comes up with a solution. I'm not suggesting that others do
this, but this is what I have decided to do.

Good Luck again...

For those new to this thread, please feel free to post your .png and WMP

this suggestion thread. Also, please vote for this thread so that it moves

Thought so, Lem. Although permissions was not the problem when I worked with two other users regarding the problem.

Hi LemJ,

I just noticed your 10/31 post. Thanks for the info. I am willing to try
this on Windows Vista (as a test), but my concern is changing the
"owner"/privileges on objects or subcontainers that may not and should not
have administrator privileges. While this worked for you in XP, isn't this a
round-a-bout way of turning off Vista's UAC? My thinking pattern is that
this gives everything administrative privileges, which is what UAC is
designed to determine on it's own. I hope I'm wrong and I very well could
be. I'm sure this is why you strongly advised to backup the registry first.

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

By the way, I'm not saying that your fix was wrong...I just want to be sure
I'm not opening up a "hornet's nest" by giving "wildcard" ownership and
privileges to every entry in my registry (Programs included).

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi Ramesh

Quicktime was already loaded on my PC when bought, I updated quicktime then
followed the directions on your supplied apple link. Removed ALL associations
in QT prefs and disabled all QT add-ons in IE, but png's still not displaying
unless running IE as Admin :(( Png files work in all other apps, including
explorer when viewed as icons.

Seems to me this problem/solution is in the registry, but your reg merge
does not complete it's task because of processes still running. This might
also be a problem with a file's user/groups permissions, which I'm not an
expert on in windows OS.

Thanks for your help with this issue.....

Hi JK,

Using the freeware "Process Monitor" utility, you can check if there any ACCESS DENIED errors when loading a .png file, or when merging my REG file.

With the process monitor I see the following entry:

iexplore.exe 3968 RegOpenKey HKCU\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content
Type\image/png NAME NOT FOUND Desired Access: Query Value

This occured when I went to the Windows Vista community webpage, running IE
as user (not administrator). Seems to be the same number of entries in the
process manager as there are png files on the webpage.

As a followup to the process monitor post, I reviewed my registry and
noticed the following:

HKey_Users_Root has a path of:

HKUR\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/png

The entry contains values

HKey_Current_User has no similar path but does have the following:

HKCU\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/png

The entry contains "NO" values

So it looks like IE is looking in the wrong path and that the correct path
is still bad because of the "NO" values.

Hi again Everyone,

After looking at some other threads and reading LemJ's posts, I have written
to (Quicktime) to have them look at this thread. Not sure if it is related
to Quicktime, but some have posted that this problem occured after QT
installation. Now that I think back, I installed QT the same week (prior to
this issue).

I still believe that this is an issue with UAC. The question is, what
caused it (Quicktime?, a Windows update?). UAC appears to be functioning
properly with the exception of .png images and Windows Media Player.

I'll post if I hear anything from the folks at Quicktime.

JK,

That might be it. Perhaps you see any ACCESS DENIED errors when loading a .PNG in IE?

Type this in the address bar and press ENTER:

about:Tabs

(The about:Tabs shows a .PNG file.)

Hi JK,

It appears that the registry permissions for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive is messed up, as "ACCESS DENIED" error is seen in many areas in HKCU. Can you create a new user account and _test_ if the .PNG problem exists there also?

Yes the problem went away when I setup another user "FGHJK"
I then went back to original user "CVBNM" and made "FGHJK" administrator and
"CVBNM" standard user. restarted pc and original user "CVBNM" still would not
display png images :((

I've restored "CVBNM" admin rights and "FGHJK" standard user, my "CVBNM"
account also administrates my lan PCs and servers.

BTW - today's (11/13/07) MS updates for Vista and Office Pro 2007 has really
slowed down my IE, like the browser is waiting for every data object to be
screened before loading pages. This page took 2 minutes to load.

I await further instructions . . . .

I'm a member of this club too (aren't I happy?).
But in my case, Quicktime has never been installed on this (HP Pavilion
notebook) computer.

JK,

The ACCESS DENIED errors (for all of the registry keys you mentioned) appears here as well, but .PNGs display fine in IE, with or without UAC enabled. I'm clueless ATM...shall post back if I find anything.

I await further instructions . . . .

Hi JK,

It appears that the registry permissions for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive is messed up, as "ACCESS DENIED" error is seen in many areas in HKCU. Can you create a new user account and _test_ if the .PNG problem exists there also?

Well isn't that interesting... (IKidUNot never had Quicktime). I was really
hoping that we at least had a direction to persue (Quicktime), but I guess
thats not possible now.

That leaves us back at the UAC. That also leaves the "fix" in the hands of
Microsoft. I just wish they would read these posts and at least respond
recognizing that this is a known issue. It obviously is known to all of us.
There are literally thousands of posts in hundreds of threads regarding the
..png issue.

Sorry to post such a dramatic non-technical message, but I honestly don't
know what to do now. I really like Vista, but this is a major glitch that
makes it very incomplete.
